April Edition: Hay fever Season & Why Those Little Pills Aren't So Harmless

Hello community,
April is here and with it, the blossom, the birdsong… an d for so many of us, the sneezing. Itchy eyes, a runny nose, that bone-deep tiredness. Hay fever season is well and truly upon us.
And right on cue, the antihistamine tablets are stacked high in every Boots and supermarket, marketed as harmless little helpers. But here is what they don't put on the packet: most over-the-counter antihistamines cross the blood-brain barrier, making you foggy, slow and unmotivated. Research links chronic use to long-term cognitive decline, disrupted immune regulation, and even increased appetite and slowed metabolism. Not so harmless after all.
How herbalists approach hay fever differently
The most important thing: start early. The time to support your immune system is long before the pollen is flying.
For my clients I recommend a daily protocol of nettle leaf, elderflower and plantain tea or tincture, starting as early in the year as possible, giving the immune system time to regulate well before the season peaks. If you haven't started yet, don't worry, begin now and you will still feel the benefit.
Locally sourced, raw honey is another wonderful tool, its tiny amounts of local pollen help train your immune system to become less reactive over time, working on a similar principle to desensitisation therapy, just far tastier.
And here is something that doesn't get enough attention: your gut and your hay fever are deeply connected. Roughly 70% of your immune system lives in your gut, and research shows that people with hay fever tend to have less diverse gut microbiomes. Eating fermented foods, taking a good probiotic, and loading up on quercetin-rich foods like apples, red onions and berries can all make a real difference this season.
