January Newsletter: A Gentle Reset

January often arrives with a lot of noise around resetting, cleansing and starting again. I prefer a quieter approach. After the richness and stimulation of December, the body does not need extremes. It needs support, warmth and a gentle return to rhythm.


This month is about easing back into balance and helping your body do what it already knows how to do. The colder winter months are not the time for intense detoxes. We can look to deeper cleansing in the spring, when the weather warms and the body is naturally more ready for it.


Supporting Digestion After the Festive Season


A few simple herbal allies can offer meaningful support in January, helping the body ease back into balance without pushing or overstimulating

Dandelion root or leaf


Traditionally used to support gentle liver function and digestion. Dandelion helps the body process richer food and supports natural elimination. Enjoy as a tea, especially earlier in the day.




Ginger


A warming herb that stimulates digestion and supports circulation. Ginger is particularly helpful if you feel cold, sluggish or bloated. Use fresh in teas, soups or meals to gently wake the digestive system.




Fennel


My personal favourite. Fennel is known for easing bloating, gas and digestive discomfort. Fennel tea after meals can help the stomach settle and support smoother digestion.





Chamomile


A calming herb that soothes both digestion and the nervous system. Chamomile is especially helpful in the evening, supporting relaxation, digestion and more settled sleep.





A January Kitchen Reset


This is not about cutting foods out, but about adding warmth and regularity back in. Focus on warm meals such as soups, stews and broths. Eat at consistent times where possible and try to slow down when you eat. Even one warm meal a day can noticeably support digestion and energy.


Dr Schulze’s Potassium Broth is a mineral-rich vegetable broth that gently supports digestion, hydration and energy. Warm and easy to digest, it offers nourishing support during winter or when the body feels sluggish, without placing extra demands on the system.



Why Potassium Broth is so Supportive

Potassium is a key electrolyte that helps balance fluids, support healthy nerve and muscle function, and maintain energy levels. Dr Schulze’s Potassium Broth Recipe

Serves: 4-6

Prep time: 10-15 minutes

Cooking time: 1-4 hours


Ingredients

  • Potato peelings from 3-4 medium potatoes (unwashed if organic)

  • Carrot peelings from 3-4 carrots

  • 1-2 beets with greens, chopped

  • 1-2 white onions, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed

  • 2-3 stalks celery, chopped

  • Hot peppers to taste (optional)

  • Enough filtered or distilled water to just cover the vegetables

 

Optional herbs for extra winter support:

  • Parsley: fresh, bright, vitamin-rich

  • Thyme: gently supports the respiratory system

  • Dandelion root or leaf: gentle liver and digestion support

  • Bay leaf: adds digestive comfort and flavour


Method

  1. Place all vegetable peelings, vegetables, garlic, optional herbs, and water in a large pot.

  2. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to very low and simmer for 1-4 hours.

  3. Strain the broth into a bowl or jug, discarding the solids.

  4. Drink the broth warm as a nourishing drink or use as a base for soups and stews.


Tip: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze in portions.


How to Use Potassium Broth

  • Sip a cup in the morning or afternoon for hydration and mineral support.

  • Use as a base for winter soups or stews to add extra nutrition.

  • Combine with gentle movement, warm meals, and herbal teas to support the practice of wintering.
