Eczema, Asthma, and Hayfever: Understanding the Connection
When a patient came to me with the classic combination of eczema, asthma, and hayfever, it was clear her immune system was in overdrive. She described feeling perpetually reactive, struggling with poor sleep, and experiencing hormonal tension that was compounding everything including cramps and mood shifts.
The atopic triad tells us something important: these three conditions stem from the same root, an overresponsive immune system. As a naturopath and herbalist, rather than treating each symptom separately, I wanted to work with her whole system.
A Naturopathic Treatment Approach
My approach centred on two key principles. First, supporting lymphatic drainage and gently modulating her immune response. A reactive immune system benefits from calming, regulating support rather than stimulation. Second, addressing her sleep, which I knew would have a cascade effect on hormones and overall wellbeing. Better rest would give her body the foundation it needed to heal.
Herbal Medicine for Immune Support
I created a herbal tincture blend of echinacea, astragalus, skullcap, and burdock root, chosen to support immune regulation and calm the nervous system. Alongside this, she had a daily hay fever tea of nettle and rose hip, and Bedtime drops of chamomile and skullcap to support rest.
Diet and Lifestyle for the Atopic Triad
Dietary changes were equally important. I suggested avoiding all dairy products for at least the first month, as well as sugar, alcohol, and refined carbohydrates. Instead, I encouraged oily fish a couple of times weekly, rich in omega 3 essential fatty acids that help reduce inflammation, and quercetin rich foods like blueberries, broccoli, kale, and red onions. I also recommended lymphatic massage and gentle rebounding on a small trampoline to support drainage.
One Month On
When she returned after four weeks, her sleep had transformed completely. Her skin was noticeably clearer and hormonally she felt more balanced.
As hayfever season peaked, we continued the tea and introduced a probiotic, recognising that a large percentage of immune function lives in the gut. We also added a sinus clear herbal immunity wash to support her through the season.
